My wheelchair, maybe?

What’s the oldest thing you own that you still use daily?

I suppose you could say that the oldest thing that I use on a daily basis is my electric wheelchair. As I got my first electric wheelchair when I was 2.5 years old, therefore I have been using an electric wheelchair for over 23 years. But I suspect that because I have had a new wheelchair every few years or have had parts replaced on my wheelchair. You would probably not consider my wheelchair as being more than a few years old, as this is the age of the one I’m currently using, though it is something I used daily. To be honest I would probably agree with this, so let’s try again and answer this question.

For me, the first part of answering this question is considering things that I use on a daily basis. While most of these things like my phone, TV, and eletric blanket are new or not more than a few years old at most. And let’s not forget my wheelchair.

There are many older things that I have that I do not use on a daily basis. These are kept primarily I use for memories of my childhood. But one thing that I do use on daily basis that I have been using for years is my wheelie tray.

A picture of one similar to the one I use is included below.

Image Description: A double-shelved tray on 4 wheels with brown bars connecting the cream trays and 4 black wheels.

I use this tray as my bedside table for as long as I can remember. As my bed is a hospital-style bed on wheels, I need a bedside table that can move in the same way.

This tray came to me I believe from an elderly relative, so I’m honestly not sure how old it is. I am aware of its societal associations with only being used by elderly people. However I try to ignore this and can confidentially say that I use it on a daily basis, and without it I would be lost.

I hope this post shows you that accessibility aids don’t need to new to be useful. And also that if something is useful to you, you should use it. You should put yourself first and try to ignore any stereotypes that may exist with the use of a specific accessibility aid within society. Try to put yourself and what you need first. You will thank you for it.

I also want to add a quick note here to thank whoever added these writing prompts and also whoever selects them. I have personally found many of them very helpful to ensure that I keep writing daily.
